Interior Design Honours Project | 2024

A New Age of Care

About the Project

A New Age of Care is a part of a 2024 Honours project. This project was completed over approximately eight months and is accompanied by an in-depth research exegesis.

This project explores the critical role of interior design in aged care facilities, focusing on improving mobility and quality of life for elderly residents. As Australia's ageing population grows, there is an increasing need for well-designed aged care spaces that prioritise safety, comfort, and a sense of home. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining practice-based investigation with structured interviews of family members and design professionals.

The project adapts the concept of walkability, assessing the mobility of two profiled residents within various time frames. This approach, inspired by Clarence Perry's "neighbourhood unit" model, aims to enhance accessibility and community connection within aged care settings. The project also incorporates Australian Standards and government guidelines to ensure designs meet safety and regulatory requirements.

By examining the interplay between design elements and resident well-being, this research seeks to establish new standards for aged care facilities. The findings aim to inform future design practices, emphasising the creation of environments that support dignity, independence, and overall quality of life for elderly residents. This work contributes to the ongoing dialogue about improving aged care design to meet the evolving needs of an ageing population.
